Learning The “Secrets” of Pets

How to Choose the Right Treats for Your Dog

Treats are great for showing your doggo a little more love. These yummies can be all kinds of foodies, from the scrap of leftover steak in your fridge to that sweet little doggy biscuit you bought at a pet bakery. The question is, what are the right treats you should be giving your dog?

Dogs deserve some treats every now and then. Treats can be quite beneficial for them. Some are made to improve canine dental health. They can also help motivate the dogs during training or when you just want to teach him good behavior.

While you’re giving treats to your dog, you feel good about each other and this contributes to strengthening that bond that you share between you.

The issue though is that not all treats are great for your dog. Unless you’re careful, you may be giving your pet something laden with sugar and/or fat. As you probably know, these two can lead to weight gain, especially as it’s usually hard to keep a tab on how much your pet has received within a day. Almost 50% of pets in the United States are overweight, which makes them more likely to develop all sorts of health problems.

A 20-pound dog could only burn 700 calories daily, depending on how active he is. If you give your dog two or three 100-calorie biscuits a day, you can easily push him into overindulgence.

If you’re trying to prevent your dog from being overweight, or if he’s already overweight, either save those treats for special occasions or keep his treats low-calorie. It’s also wise to be choosy about the brand of treats you give your dog. For example, Betsy Farms is known for making not only enjoyable but also nutritious dog treats, such as their famous Betsy Farms chicken jerky.

As for table scraps, the problem is that they’re usually high in fat and sugar and can easily upset your pet’s tummy, apart from destroying his appetite for healthy food altogether. Hence, when your family is eating, make sure to keep your pet outside the room.

So how do you choose the right treats for your dog?

First and foremost, choose treats which are specifically made for dogs. An example would be Betsy Farms duck jerky dog treats which your pet will absolutely enjoy without causing health issues.

Buy treats that contained added nutrients or dental benefits as well. Or buy your dog some broccoli, carrots and other high-fiber, low-calorie veggie treats.

Keep in mind that some table foods can be harmful to canines, such as onions, raisins, grapes and chocolate. Lastly, if you’re having doubts about a certain kind of food, don’t hesitate to ask your veterinarian for more info. Or make sure you don’t veer away from well-known dog food brands like Betsy Farms.
